Show THE WORK OF THE CINCINNATI CONVENTION. The republican national convention conven-tion has done its work and adjourned sine die. In some respects it has disappointed both friends and enemies. ene-mies. It has aet up a generally moderate platform and probably the etrongest ticket within its power. It has taken counsel of its own fears and profited y its own dangers. Still it is the republican p.irty, laden with crimes of corruption and fraud and numberless sins of omission and commisiien. It cannot hide its history his-tory nor escape the consequences of its blunders. It is still weak and wicked, though politic, fanatical and designing. Yet it is something for a great party to curb its worst men, and make the concessions it has done to the popular reform sentiment. Though we fear the republican party will not be able to reform itself, it has at least in its nominations paid a tiibuteto decency and beeded to a certain eitent the warnings of its best men. |
