Show PCRK TO A BUSHEL OF ' CHAIN. - J. E. Ontario: "Can you inform lie through your journal what tho j jxperimetils of agricultural colleges ,iave shown to be the greatest amount )i pork produc-xl from a bushel of ;raiu; that is, from oats, barley, corn ir peas, tho bogs having plenty of f vegetables to keep them in healthy 30iKlilion?" Wo are sorry to say that agricul- tural colleges have not yet made ' acurate experiments to determmethis i question in the shape put. All, or nearly all the experiments were tried with corn meal alone, the piga show- j ing at short intervals dwordertU diges- j tion lor the want of the vegetables mentioned. The most elaborate ex- periments tried have been at the Michigan agricultural college, which we have published from time to time as they have appeared. Here tlie weighing of pigs and food were carried out with great accuracy, but tbe pigs were so often dainty in their eating that it did not determine tha real value of a bushel ol corn when fed in connection with fibrous food; it merely determined the value of corn meal fed pure and simple. But this has its value, for it shows what may be expected when tho nature of the pig's stomach is thus abused, and this mode of feeding is quite generally resorted to during the fattening season. sea-son. This series of experiments showed about ten pounds average increase in-crease of live wcght to a bushel ol corn meal. Y. Live Stock Journal. |
