Show i SPECIE EESrjJiPTIOS. A bill haa been introduced in the house of representatives authorizing ( the secretary of the treasury to in- crease the interest-bearing national 1 uVbt by the redemption of legal ten- ' dcr notes in -1 per cent, furty year bonds, and requiring the ua- i tional banks to accumulate and hold an increasing portion ot 1 their reserve- in gold coin with the view probably to their resumption re-sumption of specie payment ia January, Jan-uary, 1S79, when under the act of last year the legal tender notes are to be redeemed and retired. This mean-re will doubtless be pressed to an im-1 im-1 mediate consideration and is likely to receive a thorough discussion. It u known that thero are a largo number of representatives opposed oven to the act of the last congress for resumption in lS7i believing it to have been premature and unwise, and it is hardly possible that the proposed amendment par tially anticipating resumption can become a law. Though all tho people peo-ple would be glad if the time had ar-I ar-I rived when every dollar of our cur- Irency were equal in value to gold cam, still no act of congreiscan m.ike j il so unw the government has the , gold in its vaults lor the redemption o! I its paper. U it haa not it must buy the gold, and increase the national debt by tho amount of greenback lctal tenders redeemed. This is th long and ihort of tho mime ti., to re-- re-- sumption basineaj; but some people are never satisfied unlesi thiy hare some grand agitation on hand. -1 |
