Show DBITUAEY C5&.KL0TIE CUSHMAH. Charlotte S. Cushman, the well-known well-known American actress, died on Friday morning, February ISth, in the city ot Boston, where she was born July 23d, 1S1G. On account of the bankruptcy of her father she was called upon at the age of 12 to contribute con-tribute to the support of her family. She made her debut as a singer at the Tremont temple, Boston, April IS, lS;)o; but shortly after her voice failed while she was filling an engagement engage-ment at Jiew Orleans, when she resolved re-solved to become an actress, appearing appear-ing success fully as Lady Macbeth. She accepted a three years' engagement, engage-ment, at the Bowery theatre, New-York, New-York, but after performing a week she was attacked by fever, and during her sickness the theatre- was burned, and her entire theatrical wardrobe. Subsequently she filled a three years' engagement at the Park theatre as a stock actress, in the meantime taking great pains in bring out her sister Susan as an actress. Subsequently she assumed the direction of a Philadelphia Phila-delphia theatre, and in IS 14 with Mr. Macready made a tour of the northern Btates. In llHo she went to England, where she enacted leading roles, coming back to America in 1S49. After another tour in England she returned to America and took a farewell leave of the American stage, but she again went to England, and on her return here appeared again upon the stage in 1)7 and 1S33, and in 1S71 played an engagement in 'ew York. In fact ahc never fully gave up the profession, profes-sion, until her tailing health rendered her presence upon the boards no longer possible. Miss Cushman wilt long be remembered as a marked instance in-stance ol the force and determination of tha American character, and as in all rcspctU the uiont successful of our native actressea, or uUigc artiste, for she must bo reg.in.le-l as being entitled en-titled to this distincli'.'ij, |
