Show The rolilicul Church. Boston, 11. At the New England Methodist conference a letter was read detailing tho recent killing of Rev. William H. Scott in South Carolina, Caro-lina, and the following resolutions wore oflured: Jiesolvcd, That wo hereby utter anew our protest against those twin relics of slavery and rebellion, the slave whip and shot gun, and call upon all christian people of the south to sup- cnrislian people in me aimm iu ouF-pres ouF-pres this renewed outbreak of bar- , barism. JicxolvcJ, That we desire to express our sympathy for our brethren, laborers labor-ers in this field, amid hardship, poverty pov-erty and peril of life, and to assure them that no word or ellort of ours shall be wanting in their behalf; and, IttsfAvcd, That we call upon the government of the United Stales, before all questions of party consideration, consider-ation, to employ its utmost influence and power in the suppression of violencs and tho protection of all elapses of citizens in the exercise ol their civil and religious rights. Tho resolutions were referred to tho committee on stato of the country. A motion was made to transmit a copy ot the resolutions to Goveruor Wade Hampton of South Carolina, and was received with hisses aud not entertained enter-tained by the bishop. Tho conference committee to whom was referred the political resolutions reso-lutions before mentioned, reported the following as a substitute: Ilcaolvcd, Xtiat we rocpectfully request re-quest our representing bishop, Rev. R. L. Foster, to inquire into the facts and circumstances of the shooting of Rev. Wm. H. Scott, and it he finds them such ns has been here reported, bring them to the notice of the entire church in such way as ho may deem wise, that it may tako such action thereon as tho necessities of the case reouired. The report was briefly discussed and adopted. |
