From year to year w have been accustomed to pause in our daily pur-suns pur-suns ana net apart time to offer our thanks to Almighty God for special blesainga he has vouchsafed to us, with our prayen for a continuance thereof. We have at this time equal reason to bo thant-fnl .it his continued contin-ued prtoection, and form any material blessings which hU bounty bus bestowed. be-stowed. In addition to these favors accorded to us aa individuals, we have special occasion to express our hearty thanks to Almighty God, that by his providence and guidance our government, gov-ernment, established a century ago, has been enabled to fulfill the purpose of ita founders, in offering an asylum to the people of every race, securing civil and religiaus liberty to all within its borders, and meting out to every individual justice and equality before the law. It is moreover especially our duly to ofler our humble praises to tbe Father of all mere ten for a continuance con-tinuance of bis divine favor to us as a nation, and as Individuals. By reason of all these considerations, I, Ulysses 3. Grant, president of tha United States, do recommend lo the people of the United States, lo devote the 30th day of November next to the expression of their thanks and prayer to Almighty God; and, laying aside their daily avocations, and all secular avocations, to aadctnhle in their respective re-spective p luces of worihip, and observe ob-serve sucb day as a day of thanksgiving thanks-giving and rent. Having been abundantly blessed and lavored by Divine Providence during dur-ing tho vicissitudes of another year, and realising our accountability to God, who has preserved our lives, who t has given us seed time and a bouuti- i ful bar vest, who has prospered our l miuing industries and yielded to us i rich treasures from tho erlh, let us keep in mind our obligations to him for his mercies, and in grateful recog- i nition observe ft day of thanksgiving ; and praise an honored custom tend- i ing to keep alive in our hearts re- memhrances of God's great goodness towards, his creatures. 1 To this end. therefore, and in accordance ac-cordance with the recommendation of the president of the United Btatea, I do hereby designate Thursday, the 30th day of November next, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty Al-mighty God. X recommend that the people ofthiB territory abstain from secular pursuits on that day, and assemble in their respective places of worship, and there with devout hearts join in Buch devotions devo-tions as shall be pleasing and acceptable accept-able to our heavenly Father. I also recommend those more especially lavored with the comforts of life and the riches of tbis world, to remember the unfortunate and poor, that charity and deeds of love may attest the sin--jiriitf of our devotious.
