Show WASHINGTON. j The Senate and HoyeV tbi-uet. tbi-uet. I j Washington, 8.-L36t night's out-,r look regarding the confirmation of ,1 cabinet appointments has not ma-. c tMiaily cn:u,ged to-day, except per-1 haps in tnu case of cchurz, against , woom the opposition seems to be 1 1 gaining tom additional strength. Some democrats advocate onpos.uou i to Evarts' confirmation, and charge that ho was a party to alleged intrigues in-trigues by which democratic aunport was obtained (or the electoral act un-diT un-diT false pretences, or misleading aa-Isurancts. aa-Isurancts. Schurs nomination encounters en-counters much moro opposition among republican than that of Kvarm, or ivun that of Key. Iho grounds of opposition ore not only political I ut bitterly personal, aa he mado manv enemies while in the senate by his pronounced independence independ-ence of party ties, and has frequently exercised powers of sarcasm. His confirmation will also be opposed by eomo republic vns from tho diupas-Mona'e diupas-Mona'e belief that lie does not possess business experience- and administrative administra-tive ability enouth for the proper discharge dis-charge of the mutilanous duties ol secretary of the interior. There seems to be no doubt that the democrats will all vote lor Key, and that hia confirmation con-firmation is therefore certain. Phe Opinion to-night is that EvartB will bo confirmed by a considerable majority. The fato ofSchurz's nomination is still unortain, but unless the democrats unoriuin, uu.v in a body 1 refrain from voting the chances appear now to favor his confirmation. con-firmation. Sargent to day made tho motion for Sherman's confirmation, and announced himself strongly in favor of confirming all the rest ol Hayes' cabinet appointments immediately. imme-diately. Booth also.heai tily approves i all of them. . Chieniro, 8. Tribune's Washington: Washing-ton: Unconfirmed baseless rumors prevailed to-night that Schuiz would refuse to accept a cabinet position. Senator Cameron has been endeavoring endeavor-ing to create factious opposition among democrats to the confirmation of Hayes' cabinet, but met no success suc-cess and to day voted himself for Sherman. Senator Angus Cameron or Wisconsin, Wis-consin, is dangerously ill to-night of inflammation of the bowels. Devina arrived from Boston to day and had a very satisfactory talk with the president. THE nUEACH WIDENING. The president stands firm against tho tremendous pressure to induce him to abandon his nominees. His friends say should the senate refuse to confirm the nominations he would notify them that he had no further communication for them, which would bo practically proroguing the senate. He would theu havo the right to make ad interim appointments appoint-ments and run his own matters without the consent of the senato. The senato now has only a slim republican majority 38 republicans, 33 democrats, and Judge Davis independent. inde-pendent. Sherman is out. There are three vacancies, two from Louisiana Louisi-ana and ono from South Carolina. Should democrats fill these the republicans repub-licans would have only two majority. At present, owing to the absence and sickness of some republicans, the democrats have very near a majority. Mr. Schurz was at tho executive mausion this evening in consultation with the president. The call was moro social than official. TlOOPa IN TIIE SOUTH. The question of removing troops from the south is likely to rest for tho present, as thero is no disposition on tho part of the president to make any move hastily. . MILITARY RECEPTION. President Hayes to-night officially received officers of the army, navy and marine corp3. The event was one of the most brilliant that has over animated the parlors of tho executive ex-ecutive mansion. Nearly every officer of the army, navy and marine corps -stationed here, and many others, were present. General Sherman Sher-man headed the army, Admiral Porter, Por-ter, the navy, and the marino corps was presided over by Col. Hcywood. The reception lasted until nearly ten o'clock. |
