About three weeks ago Auditor McGrew of tbe postoffice department at Washington detected, through a new system ot keeping account a inaugurated by bimsetl, a swindling operation which has been going on several years by or through the connivance of an em ploy d of tbe department named O'Brien, and by which it was thought the department had been robbed of $H0,000. F. B. Lilley, deputy auditor of the department, depart-ment, was immediately dispatched to this city, where he has since been engaged en-gaged with Chief Special Agent F.W. Schaurte and his corps of detectives in working up the case. The peculations pecula-tions were all made at points remote from this city, in the wtBt and southwest, south-west, and Mr. Lilley's mission has been so successful that he left for Washington to-night with over $20,-000, $20,-000, recovered from various persons who have been in collusion with O'Brien. |
