Show Postuflica Peculation. j Dr. John Taggart of Salt Lake city, Utah, has been examined before the committee upon postoffices and post roads, upon the subject of corrupt mail Iettings. Taggart was a warm : friend of Giles A. Smith, the former second assistant postmaster general, and also his brother, General Morgan L, Smith. Taggart, on account of his friendliness with the Smiths, was employed by Gilmer ifc Saulsbury, a heavy contracting firm in California, to obtain for them A contract for two prominent mail routes in Utah. If successful, Taggart was to be paid $10,000. The contracts, in the end, were awarded to Gilmer it Saulabury, and when Taggart demanded the money promised him, the firm refused re-fused to pay him anything, saying that the contracts had already cost them so much iu the postoffice department de-partment that they could not afford to pay him anything.
