Show St. Johns, N. B., baa boon nearly destroyed by fire. It wa3 a very wealthy city, containing numerous costly public and privato buildings. Almost all tho business portion, including in-cluding the banks, stores of all do scriptions, rjewspapcr offices, hotels, etc., have been destroyed, and two-thirds two-thirds of tho city has disappeared, with several of tho churches. Thei people aro reported a3 homeless aod dea'itute. The calamity is perhaps more sweeping than that ot the Cbicago conflagration of 1S71, in proportion pro-portion to the population. Great effort wilt bo made by the peoplo ol the Uuited States to relieve the immediate im-mediate sufloriug of the destitute city. Portland and Bangoi have already scut relief in the shape of provisions and food. |
