WiUoo of Jellersou county was made temporary chairman and addressee the convention conven-tion briefly. During his remarks he stated thai there would be no dissension dissen-sion in the convention, but that Iowa republicani-iiii would not be lowered or its flag trailed in the dust. At 2 o'clock the convention organized organ-ized with Hun. J. F. Wilson as permanent per-manent chairman uud proceeded at once to tbu nominations. John H. Gear of Burlington was nominated for governor on the first formal ballot, having received ovfr 5U0 votes. Hon. Frank T. Campbell of Jasper county was nominated for lieutenant governor. govern-or. When the nominatioua were an-. an-. nounced for supreme justice tht present incumbent. Chief Justice Day, was almost unanimously called for by the counties. Prof. Vou Coellen was nominated for superintendent superin-tendent of public instruction. The committee u resolutions reported re-ported tho following resolutions : First That tho United States of i America is a nation, not a league, and that by the combined workings of the national and state governments the rightB of every citizen Bhould be secured. To fail to do this is & crim-h.o.1 crim-h.o.1 neglect of duty. preserved the government, and its work is unfinished. Third The permanent pacification of the south and tho complete protection protec-tion of all citizens in the free enjoyment enjoy-ment of all their r ghts is a duty to which tho republican party stands sacredly pledged. Oongreaa is constitutional! consti-tutional! v empowered to enforce the principles of the recent constitutional constitu-tional amendments, and it is the solemn duty of .the legislative and executive departments to put in .immediate and vigorous exerciso ail their constitutional powers tor removing remov-ing any just cause ot any class and to secure to all American citizens exact equality in the exercise of all rights. We, therefore, demand of congress and tho president courage and fidelity which shall not falter until the results are placed beyond dispute or recall. The law under which its coinage was suspended should be repealed re-pealed at the earliest poayible day and silver made with gold a legal tender for the payment of all debts, both public and private. We also believe that the present volume ol currency should be maintained until tho wants of trade and commerco demands ita further contraction. The other resolutions are local in their character. Risley attempted, amid great uproar, up-roar, hisses and shouts, to get in an amended resolution, endorsing the president's policy, but the chair ruled it not germain. Another attempt was made by another member, with no better success, suc-cess, and all the resolutions were then adopted seriatim. |
