Show Con(ctuplalD turvullou. Washington, 16. Tho secretary of -the treasury, in reducing tbe forceB of his department, is seeking to obtain the voluntary resignation of those , who are willini;. He Bays to all who will resign after tho 20th id this month thut they shall be paid to the 10th of October, the time wheu the general discharge of the clerks is to be r made. Several clerks resigned today, to-day, and it ia thought there will be at least a hundred resignations. There b are a good many young men iu the 11 department who desire to leave and seek bnsiness, and this advance of P payment will enable them to go away with a small margin to cover tempor ary expenses. The same course was 5 pursued last year with some advantage advan-tage to both clerks and oflicers of the department.- There will be about 500 reductions to the treasury department which, Morrill says, will be a hard L blow in the Bervico. It will be a hard blow to poor clerks, also, who will for ' the most part, exoept those who may resign, be left at the point of starvation. starva-tion. When Randall's guillotine falls on October 10th, 500 employe's, upon whose labor the living of themselves ' und families depend, will be liice the same number of factory operatives when a great mill has burned down. The suflering will be terrible; the more so as no real exigencies of the government require it. The officers of the departments are taking every pains to render the calamity as light as possible; but it cannot be mitigated very much. |
