Show Rodkt.t Dale Owen, who died at hid summer residence on the shores of Laka George, Now York, ou Sunday Sun-day last, was the sou of Robert Owen, au English social reformer. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, November 7, 1S01, and received his education in Switzerland. Ha accompanied his father to the United Suits in 1S-3, and five years later engaged in the publication of a weekly paper in New York called tho Frco Ecquirer, in partnership with a Miss Frances Wright. In 1S31 he went to Now Harmony, Indiana, where ho was three times elected a member of the legislature and then to two terms iu congress. In 1S30 ho was elected a member of the convention whL-h amended the constitution of Indiana, and afterward in the legislature introduced intro-duced measures securiu" to tho women of that state independent rights of property. In 1S3j he was appointed minister to Naples. He was a strong advocate of the emancipation of the slaves, and a!so a fervid and prominent promin-ent believer in the phenomena of gpiritualism. Ho published several works ou the latter subject. j |
