Show It was not his idea that a man was a ! great financier when ho obtained his wealth unlawfully. lu r lerred to the late Commodore Vanik-rbili, find nlluded to some of his speni'aiions, which were sometimes calb-d financiering, finan-ciering, but he, tho speaker, looked upon such transactions as tantamount to robbery. He theu showod huw money could be made honestly; paying pay-ing every one justly for his labor; this was financiering, but talcing that wuicu waa iiol ineir own reduced people who did ao to the lovel of thieves. If confidence had to bo restored, re-stored, it must be done by fairdealing between all parties. When the sinters talked about any one they ahould do so in a manner that they would have I no objection to its boiui; heard by the I parties themselves. If any Ivrd I that othera had done wren-j, they I should to 'o them and ak them the! question, "Hava you done so and ', ao?" Get their explanation, and in foctly justified. Referred to many who had made their mna m this territory by taking advautn-e ot liicir neighbors. Were it nut I r tho, spe-ker. the people who were now, bafore him would have to pay twice I the pricea they now do for their go xls. Snnii uf the working men were just as i dishonest in many instances as the' capitalists. Tho president then slated that the twelve apostles would travel and look after the interests of the peopla in the 1 various stakes throughout the terri-1 lory, organizing stakes aud appoint' j mg otlicera where needed, and that! three who would not live, up to the j principles of the gospel in r gliteom- ness would be dealt with, and the thread of connection between them ; and the church would be severed, un i less they repented. In closing he hoped that those who reported his; remarks would write 'what he siid.i and not write a lot of lies. It was some time since he had had the pleasure of i meeting with the saints in this place, ' as ne auu a numoer ol the twelve hat traveled to St. Gterge and visited tin settlements on the route. Relatec his travels, and the feelings he ha experienced in the St. George temple. One of the principles that nppeared tr prevail mu.iug the saints in the south. a.i well as those in tho north, was the buildiDg of temples! Referred to the great m inifestatiou-nf inifestatiou-nf the powr of God in the temple at KrlUud reared by the L itter day Sints, who were then few in nina berg, an account of which manifestations manifesta-tions were to be found iu the Book ol Doctrine and Covenants. Also alluded to tint Nauvoo temple; the saints then bad to contend agaimtetil influences who concocted lies against them, and the workers on the temple had tc labor with firearms in readiness to protect themsu.vGB from the encroachment encroach-ment of their enemies. The work ol furnishing means to build the temple at this stake nasi been laid upon the seventies and high priests, which they had done to quite a lartia amount, and manifested a disposition to continue con-tinue in the good wort. Made mention men-tion of the location and prospective rearing ot other temples in difiVrcni parta of the terrritory. Elder Gsorqe Q. Cannon then presented the general authorities of tha church, aud uf this stake of Zion, who were sustained by the unanimous vote ol the congregation. No changes were made from those sustained at The last conference in this city. Elder Cannon then read the following follow-ing names of elders called to go on missions, and stattd that more would be called on Sunday: August Wilcken of Salt Lake city, to Mexico. Job Smith of Salt Lako city, to California. Cali-fornia. S. H. B. Smith of Salt Lake citv. to California. J' Elder C. C. Rich then addressed the conference. The kingdom of God would have to be built upon principles that were ordained from before the foundation of the world. Il would be in vain to imagine that the saints could enter and enjoy the celestial celes-tial world upon any other principle than that which was established by the Lord, and in accord with hia will. It was for the sainta to reflect whether they would he governed by these principles which had been preached to them, not following after their own will, but the will of Him who bad called them. There were duties to be performed here by the saiotb which could not be performed in any other sphere, and the opportunities to do a work for themselves and their dead frauds should be reached after and enioyed. No previous generation ol men had lived at such an important period of the world'a history ns the present. Ho urged the saints to faithfulness faith-fulness and obedience lo what had 1 been advanced by the previous speak era at tne conference. Elder L. Snow then arose and aaid tha Latter-day saints believed that every nation and people were the ofljpring of god in eternity, and tho priesthood waa given the saints to enable men to learn the wave ot God and to teach mankind the" things of his kingdom. Referred to the hippy homes and many comforts enjoyed by the people ol this territory. Thie work must be built up with the same spirit which bad actuated the elders w hn Wfiit (nrlh mil nn.hs:! pel to the world. This spirit had been described by the Savior as able to reveal thing to come, and to make the things of God plain and show them unto the sainta, giving to every one who possessed it au independence as regarded the knowledge of God, so that they need rely on no man for their testimony and faith. The teachings of President Young were to the end that the sainta might become as independent in temporal matters as they now were in spiritual, and to ewtablHh those industries in their mnlr-t which would render the importation im-portation of many articles unnecea-s unnecea-s iry. Choir sang the anthem, "O, praise-Cm! praise-Cm! in bis holiness," etc. Adjourned till Sunday morning at 10 o'clock. Benediction by Bishop Evans. |
