Show Shooiiog Stars. ; The prospect of a dispUy of shoot-i;ing shoot-i;ing stars between the 13ih and lGih j was the topic of numerous lively conversations con-versations yrsterdiy, and not a ftw ( disagreements. By some it was claimed the exhibition would be unusually grand, as the heavenly bod;es would d import themselves in a most lively and interesting man Dei which would fully compensate the person gritty enough to keep out of bed until 1 o'clock in the mcrning, and maintain a vigilant watch up to that hour. Toia is what Prof. Tice predicted, and many on the etrerglh of this prediction spent the better part of the night on lookout. On the other hand, sinud aid works on astronomy state that a display will take place on or about the 13th instant., but that it will be of any unusual grandeur ia not intimated. inti-mated. There are periods when the earth passes through a belt of these shooting stars, and it is tbfu that the sight is more remarkable than u?tfal. Howeer, no exhibition of wonderful maguificence ia predicted until the year 1899, when one of the remarkable remark-able periodical heavenly exhibitions will take place, aa it did in 1797. These displays occur about once in every thirty-three and one-third yean, as in 1799, 1S33, 1667, and 1S99, when it cornea. Those particularly interested in astronomical wonders, if they but sit up and keep a good wa'.ch, will probably be rewarded by a sight worth seeing. Only twenty y ears ! If there was any display la3t night or thia morning, no one could see it, for the sky was eo cloudy as to prevent pre-vent the possibility of getting a glimpse at any ol tbe heaveniy bodies. However, there are a couple more nights in which to pr03ecute observa- ; ttons. ' j |
