Show STEIVARl'M BODY. El Remains With The Thieves. New York, 14. New disclosures of the A. T. Stewart case appear briefly as tuilows: i'.nricfc H. Jouc-s, ei-posttDUter ei-posttDUter and ex county register ol New York, is tbe lawyer through whom tbe grave- robbers have been endeavoring to negotiate the saie ol the retiifUiiS for $-00,000. Ua receiving re-ceiving ibeir communication accompanied accom-panied by the cotbn plate aud h ndles which they forwarded to establish the genuineness of their oiler, Jones con-lerrtd con-lerrtd with the police superintendent, placed tho articles w:tu bim, opened correspondence with the robbers through, personals in a newspaper news-paper aadreesing his communications commu-nications to Henry B. Komaine, Montreal, He then saw Judge Hil ton, who received him discourteously ai d took up the case himself, but up to the present time refused to listen to the sum demanded. Jones ceased active participation in tbe mau ;r, though be has been closely wiilched by detectives. The Tribune, to-days, says: All hopes that tbe re-fusnl re-fusnl to negotiate frr the return of the body, on tbe terms named, or other than the payment of tbe reward of $25,000, which oiler Jonea transmitted by mail to Ilomaiuo, would lead tbe thieves in desperation to reveal themselves, them-selves, were finally abandoned by Hil ton about three weeks ago, and he has reopened negotiations this time, it is believed, with the purpose of buying tha body outright, and ttiihoul any attempt to secure tbe thieves. It ia clear all efforts hereto fore have been baffled. There is no question thai Komaine is selected as agent of the robbers, and has the body iu charge. Ho haa carelully concealed bis identity, and bis handwriting hand-writing is so disguisad as to baflle any attempt to detect him by that means. It appears also that Mrs. Stewart had been deceived into supposing the ie-maiuB ie-maiuB were recovered, and every effort was made to creato thie impression im-pression everywhere with the view of bringing out communications from tho rubbers. The Times prints a remarkable story by an Italian sculptor, named dala, who, in his communications with the authorities, is proven to possess knowledge of the robbery and identity of tbe robbers. He says he will only move in the matter again when payment of the reward and exponses is assured. |
