In the commons today to-day there was a long and exciting debate on the petition praying for dismissil from tne bench of the judges judg-es who sat in the Tichborue trial, on ths ground of partiality and corruption, corrup-tion, and fcr the impeachment of the speaker of the house of commons lor similar reasons. JOn motion of Disraeli the petition was rejected. The annual budget was submitted to the house to-night by the chancellor chancel-lor of the exchequer. It bIiows that the surplus receiptsover expenditures for the fiscal year ending March 3lst, 1875, was 593,833; expenditures for the current fiscal year are estimated at o,47o,000; revenues, iobbor 000, leaving a surplus ot 417,000. The chancellor stated that these estimates es-timates are liable to be affected by supplementary estimates in connection connec-tion with Irish education measures and other matters. The only change in taxation he proposes is the readjustment read-justment of the brewers license and atamp dutieB, through which he expects ex-pects the surplus to be reduced te 357,000. Cuilders said the estimates esti-mates were too finely drawn, and he anticipated a deficit. The budget includes the following plan for reduction of the public debt: The charge on account of the debt for the fiscal year ending March 13, 1876, is estimated at 27,115,000. Tuis chaige is to be gradually increased in-creased until it amounts to 23,000,-000 23,000,-000 in 1877, at which figure it shall permanently remain. The yearly overplus, which is not required for payment of interest, shall bo applied to redemption of the debt; thus in thirty years 213,000.000 of debt can be cancelled. |
