Show Auotlier Reaf Fire. Silver Reef seems to be like the eon of the Ameer ot Afghanistan "an ill-starred ill-starred wretch." It has suffered another an-other fire, this lime at the Barbee & Walker mill, which took place on Monday night about 9,30 o'clock. The alarm whistlo was Eounded from tbe Barbee & Walker mil', and in two minutes afterwards tho building was entirely enveloped in flames. The men on watch bad scarcely time to eecape with their lives. One man who had managed to get on tho roof with the hose was compelled to leap to the ground to save himself, which he did without injury. The mill was running at'tho time and the stamps Minnrlnrort awav until silenced bv the action of the fire. It is generally supposed that the fire was causod by a spark ignitmg eome cedar wood which had been placed convenient to tbo furnace. Many persons, including includ-ing some ol those connected with the mill, firmly believe that it waB the work of an incendiary. The loss is estimated at $G0,000. Insurance is small if any. This property had a narrow escape on Sunday evening, a wood pile on tho opposite aide of the Reef and immediately boneath the hoisting works, having caught fire and for a timo the mill wna in imminent immi-nent danger. |
