Show City Council. Proceedings at tbe city council on Tuesday evening, M.-.yor Little presiding: pre-siding: A petition wna received from Richard B. Margetta and others, relative rela-tive to a certain ditch on Third North atreet, which ia filled up and the water overflowing damages property thereabouts, and asking tbat tbe same be caused to be cleaned out. Referred to the watermaster.; A petition was r- ct-ived from John W. Snell, asking the privilege of put-ling put-ling in a four-ton pair of scales near the Idaho store. Petition granted, tbe scales to be put up under the direction of tbe elrett supervisor. A petition waa received from Mo-DuQ Mo-DuQ Brothera representing that nine or ten months ago they asked :hti .council, by petition, for the exchange of certain landB near tbe Hot SpriDgs which were imperilled im-perilled by blasts from the powder uiuguz.nee in the vicinity, for certain other Innda about half a mile from ihfs Wurin Springs, between Pascoe'a uil VauNatta's ctaima. Tbe petitioners peti-tioners cons idered tbey had a prior rint to this land and asked tbat trie ii me be conveyed to them in exchange, ex-change, aa stated by former petition, or at a reasonable price. Referred to tbe committee on public grounds. A communication was received from John R. Winder, assessor and collector, presenting the assessment roll of Salt Lake City for the year 1S79. The communication was received, re-ceived, and, on motion,. Tuesday, the 26th day of AugUBt, at 2 p.m., fixed ae the time for the board of equalization equaliza-tion to meet and bear complaints in regard to assessments made, The compensation of tbe aeaeaaor and collector, for tbe current year, was fixed at $2,000. The rate per cent, for taxation for 1S79 was referred re-ferred to a committee, to report upon at the next Bitting of the council. A petition was received from R. B. Margetta relative to the extension of the water mainB to his brewery, Nine teanlh ward, and the petitioner stated that he would advance $500 if the council would comply with hia request re-quest aud allow him to use a motor and let the amount apply on his water rates. Petition received and referred to the committee on water works. A petition was received from Louia Oviatt asking the privilege of placing wagon scales in front of bia reaidence in tbe Nineteenth ward. Granted, the work to be done under the direction direc-tion of tbe street supervisor. Tbe committee on finance, towhom waa referred the quarterly report of the auditor, reported that they bad examined the Bame, found it to be correct, and recommeodtd that the same be published as customary. Report accepted and recommendation recommenda-tion adopted. The committee on claims, to whom was referred the quarterly ropott of the street supervisor, reported that tbe same had been carefully examined and found to be correct. Tbe committee com-mittee also reported that tbey found a balance due on tbe supervisor's account, ac-count, amounting to 82,314.32, and recommended that that sum be ap propriated and placed to tbe supervisor's super-visor's account. Report accepted and amount appropriated. The committee to whom was referred re-ferred the petition of Mr. Bishop and others, asking that a certain street opsned by tbem on the block east of the depot be placed on the city plot and become the property of the corporation, cor-poration, recommended tbat the street hereafter be known aa Public street, and that the prayer of the petitioners pe-titioners be granted. Report accepted ac-cepted and the recommendations adopted. Tho committee to whom was referred re-ferred the petition of C. Merkley to a certain street in the Nineteenth Ward reported that tbey found tbe Btreet eight ruda wide, and as that waa more than was now necessary tbey recommended recom-mended that tbe parties owning the fields on either side be allowed to occupy oc-cupy three rods each, fence it and retain re-tain it during tbe pleasure of tbe council. Tbe report waa accepted and tbe recommendation adopted with the provieo tbat the parlies so occupying pay for rental $1 p per acre per annum. Regarding the petition of James Tuwneend aaking tbat tho Warm SpriDga bath houae be rented to him for a poriod ol six years.the committee to whom it was referred reported recommending that it be leased to him for a period of three years and tbat tbe lessee make all necessary repairs re-pairs aud pay to the city $100 per month. Adopted, A motion was made that the duty of assessing water rates be transferred from the aesessor to the auperinten-denl auperinten-denl of water works. The motion waa made with a view to equalizing tbe labors of city officera and wbb referred re-ferred to the committee on water worka for consideration. An appropriation of $221.67 was made to pay interest, discount, etc. An appropriation of $1,000 waa made to tho street supervisor, and $1,000 to tho superintendent of water works; also $500 to the mayor's contingent con-tingent fund. The ordinance relative to the numbering of houses waa taken up and passed its first reading. The following resolution waa adopted by the council. Whereas, Iu tbe case of Stringfe-Mow el aU v.t. Cain, involving the right to the cant half of lot 6, block G9, plot A, Salt Lake City survey, recently decided in the Supreme court of tho United States, baa been referred back to the Biipreme court ol Utah Territory Terri-tory to rehear tbe cause, in respect to the claim of Wm. Jennings and Brigham Young as to the north half of said east half lot aa against tbe corporate authorities of Silt Lake City, and to decide according to the justice of the eaae, bo it licjolccit, That the Mayor is empowered em-powered lo coueent to the entry of a decree in said supreme court of the territory, awaidiug to Wm. Jennings and the representatives of Brigham Young, deceased, the respective portions ol tbe said ball lot, aa decreed in the Third District court in said cause. Council adjourned till next Tuesday evening, at tbe usual hcur. |
