Show THE C0NSECTIC0T ELECTION. The democrats have carried Connecticut Con-necticut ly a majority somewhat in-icreastd in-icreastd from la-it year, electing the I governor and three of the four mem- hers of congrees, and probably a 'majority of tho legislature. In the lasthouise of representatives three of 1 the four members were ri publicans. This reult, while adding to the majority ma-jority in the house, gives the democratic demo-cratic party the control of a majority of the states, with the power of electing elect-ing the next president by that body should there be no election by the people. This resultoflsets the apparent appa-rent republican victory in New Hamp shire, and shows that there has been no reaction in public sentiment in favor of the adminidtiation, and thai the strength ot the anti-republican sentiment ineruaaea aa the centres of population are reached. Connecticut is a mid lie rather than a New England Eng-land state in her interest and ideas, and her verdict ia in sympathy with the empire state of New "York. It has always been a elose state, though the republicans have annually carried it since the know nothing times of 1S55 with the exception of lour or five years. The New York Tunes attributed the unfavorable result re-sult mainly to the administration policy on the force and civil rights bills, and to the position of the party on the Louisiana question. Although a largo majority of the party have sympathized with tho policy of the last congress, thero is ft considerable number of republicans who are not in sympathy with that sentiment, and who have given the democrats a larger majority than they had a year ago. They have been willing to trust the democratic party long enough to express unmistakably their disapprobation disappro-bation of the present position of some of the republican leaders. In short the people want peace, are fully determined to have it. The country must be reunited iu fact as well as in name. This view we regard as main ly a correct one, and it ia evident that '.ho Connecticut election has improved im-proved the chances of the democracy for the great contest of 1S76. If the next house of representatives can: unite upon a popular financial platform, plat-form, their success may be mado almost al-most a matter of certainty. |
