Gentlemen; In submitting to you 1 my third annual icport as superintendent superin-tendent of St. Mark's hospital, I shall simply call your attention to the work accomplished during the past year, and to our financial condition. With regard to tho work of the hospital hos-pital I have to report that during the year there have been under our care 455 patients. This number does nut include out patients, and is largely in excess of tho number cared for by us during cither of the two preceding years of the hospital's existence. The average length of time that patients have remained in residence has been ; about 14 l-5th days, making the whole number of hospital days 0,403. The cost of caring for each patient, including salaries, rent, housekeeping housekeep-ing and medicul expenses, has been $1.35 per day. The income from all sources has been $0,799.20, or a monthly average of $310.60. Tins sum has been ample am-ple to meet all our expenses, save those incurred for furniture and building and repairs, and is larger than that received during any previous year. By referring to the treasurer's report, you will seo that there is a balance against tho hospital in favor of the treasurer of $547.00, and I am sorry to have to add that there is besides this bills outstanding amounting amount-ing to $5S4.42, making our total indebtedness $1,102.02. In explanation explana-tion of this, I have to say, that tho increase in the number of patients coming under our care, rendered it necessary to increase our accomodations accomoda-tions by erecting and furnishing a new ward, at an expenso of about $300; other unavoidable expenditures for furniture and building and repairs have-brought the total outl.iy for theso objects up to 1,49(3.30, At one time hist fall we had upwaais of forty patients on our register, tho great majority of whom were subscribers to our funds, and to meet our engagements engage-ments with them, I was obliged to provide a large proportion with board outside of the hospital. This arrangement ar-rangement was bad in every way. It destroyed all discipine, as we had no control over men' living out of our sight. It in vol veil extra expense, and i produced dissatisfaction among the patients themselves. Under this pressure pres-sure the decision was made to erect a new ward. Tho monthly incomo at tho time warranted tho belief that before the year ended wo should be able to meet the oxponso thus incurred, in-curred, from our regular receipts. 3Hie result has been, howover. thnt the income has fallen oil, and instead of being able to meet any expense ex-pense of this kind your treasurer has been bard pressed to provide the funds necessary for tho regular ongoing on-going of the hospital. It may appear to you, in view of our actual experience, experi-ence, that it was unwise to undertake, under-take, as we did, the erection of a new ward. I can only lay, that it met at the time a very urgent need; has added much to tho comfort of the house, and ha given us, what wo did not have before a ward suitable lor the reception of the serious surgical cases for which we have often to provide. pro-vide. With this explanation I submit sub-mit this matter to you for your consideration con-sideration and action. As always before, the medical and surgical departments ot the hospital have been administered with commendable com-mendable efficiency and faithfulness. Economy and good judgment have been shown in the outlays for housekeeping house-keeping purposes, and I take pleasure plea-sure in assuring you thnt the condition condi-tion of the household is satisfactory and such as we may rightly take pride in. Respectfully submitted, R. M. Kirbt, Superintendent. Executive committee John Tier-nan, Tier-nan, E. A. Wall, R. M. Kirby.
