Show FRANCE. Exciting; Debate in (lie AsHem-hly. AsHem-hly. Paris, 5. The national assembly has been engaged in an exciting debate de-bate during the past two days on the bill supported by the clerical deputies for freeing the university from the control of the state. The principal speakers were Bishop Dupanloup, legitimist, le-gitimist, aud Chalamel Lacour, radical radi-cal deputy for Bouches du Rhone. Bishop Dupanloup, in the course of his remarks to-day, passionately declared de-clared that danger to society was to be apprehended from the friends of those who favored shooting the archbishop of Paris. The remark occasioned occa-sioned great tumult in the chamber. cham-ber. Upon restoration of order, or-der, Chalamal Lacour retorted upon Bishop Dupanloup in a speech of great bitterness. He said he left such personalities to the judgment of honest men and those who had some regard left for the dignity of the French episcopate. Upon the conclusion con-clusion of the discussion the bill passed to its second reading by a vote of 553 against 133. |
