Show A NEW SPANISH KING. Dispatches from France and Spain state that Price Alfonso, the sou ol thedcpo;ed Queen Isabella, has been declared King of Spain, and is recognized re-cognized by the army and navai forces. This is an event entirely unexpected, un-expected, which has probably been brought about by a compromise between be-tween the leading Carlists, many of whom have been reported as wearied of the attempt to place Don Carlos on the throne of Spain, and the military rulers of tho country. It is difficult to imagine a change of rulers in Spain without a revolution, aud it is improbable that tho elevation of the young prince will be acquiesced in by Don Carlos. What effect the change in the Spanish gorernment from a nominal republic to a monarchy will i have on the politics of Europe or the future of Cuba, cannot be predicted, but there is little doubt that the latter is best suited for the Spanish people. If the new regime would but signalize its entry into power by declaring tne gradual abolition of slavery aud the guarantee of colonial rights to the Cubans, it would merit the good wishes of the governments of America Amer-ica and the world. But we have little hops that Spain will let up an j inch on Cuba until she can hold her j people in chains no longer. |
