Show Unwarranted Destru ction of Game. At an early hour on Sunday morning a coup'e of young bloods one the son of a prominent vendor of light, the other a scion of a piilar in a certain church might have bean seen wending their way in the direction direc-tion of City Creek, each armed and equipped with a bottle of " apple Jack," a shot gun, a small sized pocket pistol, and a huge carving knife, the last named purloined from their respective mother's pantry. They were mounted on fleet mustangs and rode furiously like unto the manner man-ner of the driving of "Jehn, the eon of Nimshi." Madam Rumor, with her ten thousand tongues had spread abroad the report that innumerable deer, elk, bear, antelope and gazelles wilu uuvery leui were wauaermg aimlessly up and down a particular mountain ridge, the whereabouts ol which was well known to theaforesaid ornameLts to the society of this metropolis; "and during the precedins week they were engaged in making preparations for the wholesale slaughter slaugh-ter of the quadrepeds who had thoughtlessly exposed themselves to the destructive propensities of the two young Nimrods. The evening before leaving they made a formal call upon their numerous lady friends and urgently requested that each should accept of a large portion of the spoils of the chase. The friends were of course willing to receive presents of haunches of venison and steaks of I bear, and the evening was passed in delightful auticipation of a feast on the morrow. ; But alas for human hopes ! the sportsmen urged the fiery equines to the top of their spoed, and at an early hour arrived with frosted toes and large expectations iu tho vicinity ol where the game should have been about three miles above the saw mill. After partaking liberally of the "apple jack" and sparingly of the frozen lunch, they proceeded to climb the mountain and with bated ureatu nnu nuiaeiesa aiep Jisuieu imu each covert and traversed each ravine on tho mountain aide, fondly hoping hop-ing that the next copse of stunted oak, or the succeeding ravine concealed con-cealed the object of their search. Over banks of snow, through interminable inter-minable thickets, around precipitous ledges of rock, they fruitlessly wandered wand-ered on but no game could be found. A half-sUrved blue jay aud a magpie were the only living things they saw in all their journeyings. The "applejack" "apple-jack" was expended, their shot baga and cartridge boxes weighed a ton, and with wilted hopes aud elongated visages they, turned their steps homeward, home-ward, speculating as to how they could reach the cover of their parents' roofs without being seen by their acquaintances. ac-quaintances. Fond hearts palpitated palpitat-ed and bright eyes danced with delight de-light as the dejected pair of unsuc cessful hunters passed, through tho streets, but the bright eyes gazed anxiously and in vain for the long caravan of wagons that was to have followed bearing the trophies of the heroes' prowess. |
