Show SENTENCED. George Reynolds Sentenced and Given in Charge of the Marshal. Contrary to appointment, tbe sentencing of George Reynolds did not tke place at 9.30 o'clock yeater-day yeater-day morning. It was postponed until 2 o'clock on account of the Dudley case being unfinished, and from 2 it was again put ofi till 3 bo that all pending business could be disposed of. At the latter hour the prisoner appeared in the court room which was eti!J crowded. Judge Emerson asked Mr. Reynolds, to stand up aud inquired if he deeired to be represented repre-sented by counssl before he should be acntenced. The defendant stated. that ha did not know that he was particular. However the court waited a moment when Judge Dusenberry appeared and Mr. Reynolds again stood up. Assistant District Attorney Bealty then stated that a remittitur had been received from tho supreme court relative to the case of the People, etc., against George Reynolds, Rey-nolds, indicted for polygamy, instructing in-structing the district court to enforce the judgment, and he moved tbat the judgment be enforced. Judge Emerson Have you any thing to Bay Mr. Reynolds? Reynolds No, nil ; not that I know of. Judge Emerson You were indicted in-dicted by a grand jury of this district for the ofleuse of bigamy; tried by a jury and found guilty. An appeal was taken to the supreme court ol the territory and the judgment of the lower court affirmed. An appeal was taken then to the Supreme court of tho United SiateB. Tbe judgment waa again affirmed with the exception excep-tion of that portion of it relating to hard labor, which was reversed. The case having been sent back to the supreme court of the territory, a remittitnr la received from the latter court, instructing this court to set aside the former judgment and enter a new one in tho precise terms of the other with the exception of that part which has been reversed by the Supreme court of the United States. It ia therefore ordered and adjudged by the court that vou be imDriRnnpd for a period of two years and that you pay a fine of $500. You are remanded re-manded to the custody of the deputy marshal. The 7hole transaction occupied but a few minutes and Mr. Reynolds left the room in company with the court bailifl. HaviDg soma business to transact Mr. Reynolds waa allowed his freedom on his own recognizance. On Monday morning he will start for Lincoln, Neb., as he is to be confined in tho penitentiary at that place instead in-stead of at Detroit, aa formerly ordered. |
