Show NO MILITARY REICN IN THE UNITED STATES. Whatever difference of opinion there may be among tho readers of the Ledger on other public questions we think thoy will all agree with us that there Bhould never be a reign of military power in tho United States. No such thing can be tolerated. toler-ated. It matters not by whom it is proposed, it will never be submitted to. The military authority must bo kept in strict subordination to the civil. The executive is to execute laws, not to make them. These principles are applicable to all times and all circumstances, and there must be no departure from them. We have all felt that this country owes a debt of gratitude to General Grant and General Sheridan for their conduct during the war; but by their recnt arbitrary interference in Louisiana a flairs they are rapidly cancelling that debt, N. Y. Ledger. "You havo a pleasant homo and a bright fireside, with happy children silting around it, haven't you?" said the judge. "Yes sir," said Mr. Thompson, who thought he saw a way out of the difficulty. "Well," said tho judge, "if the happy children sit around .the cheerful fireside till you return, they will stay there just forty. three days, as I Bhall have to send you up for that time."
