Show Tne Bcechor Trial. ' New York, 27. In the Beecher trial, after recess, Judge Fullerton called Win. F. West, who testified that he was a member of the Ply- j mouth church examining committee; that Beecher asked to bo appointed a ! committee of ouo to soe Til ton after the publication of thu-W'oodhull biography, bio-graphy, and was so appointed. Beecher reported to the committee that he had seen Tilion and that be was in a crucial po&itiou; that he had many, troubles aud been surrounded by bad influences, and be thought Tilton should be left to his friends, and no action taken by the church. Witness called on Beecher in November, Nov-ember, 1872, and informed him he had been appointed one of a sub-committee to sue Tilton in reference to his position in the Woodhull matter. Beecher replied ho was very busy then, but would meet the committee com-mittee in about three weeks. Witness Wit-ness told him Tilton was n responsible respons-ible person, aud it he put forth these charges ho should be expelled from the church. Witness then gave in detail an account of several interviews nmu ucetnw iu reierenceto tne matter, mat-ter, and testified that Beecher saw the charges and specifications presented pre-sented by witness, aud told him he was taking the right course, but thought it was not a proper time to submit the charges as many members mem-bers of the church were absent. Beecher spoke in an angry tone. The charges as presented by West were produced and read. The witness was cross-examined by Shearman. Witness said he remembered remem-bered the Beecher interview, Aug. 31, 1873. He said all difficulties between be-tween him and Tilton were buried. ; He remembered distinctly that Beecher was appointed a committee of one to visit Tilton, but being shown the minutes of the church meeting, recoliected that he was simply in-formally in-formally directed to visit Tilton Frank Woodruff, of Woodruff & Bobinson, was the next witness. Ho was asked what occurred at the interview inter-view between Moultou, Tracy and himself at Tracy's otfice; but the defense de-fense objected to the question on the ground that Beecher was not present at the interview. The argument was not concluded when the court adjourned for the day. |
