A daring attempt at-tempt to rob a passenger train on the Atchison, Iopeka and Santa f railroad rail-road waa made this morning. Five armed masked men entered the station sta-tion at Kinsley, Kaoesm, and captured A, Km card, night telegraph operator, who was ordered to open the safe. He refused to do eo although his life was threatened. The west bound ex press train arrived at tbie time and the operator, by a deperate effort, broke loose, ran to the hotel near by, arousing the inmates. A volley of pistol shots was tirtd into it, and e the train slopped, the conductor, J, W. Mallory, was met by two of the iobbrs who presented pistols at bis bead and ordered him into the baggage bag-gage car. He stepped ia and closed the aoor, instantly starting the train by pulling the bell cord. Mallory and the baggage master armed themselves with carbines, carried in the car, and then stopped the train after running about a mile from the station. They went into the back coaches with arms, 1 but found the robbers not on the ' train and the passengers had not been disturbed. Immediately atter the train started the robbers, reported to be ten or filteen in number, mounted (heir horses and roda ofl rapidly, towards to-wards Arkansas river. A party ws at once organized in pursuit, and started only two or thrpe miles behind tbe robbers. A second party started at 7:30 with fresh horses, and provisions, provis-ions, and the chances are good that the robbers will be captured. The superintsndant of the road has also sent a request to the commanding officer at Fort Dodge for a party ot soldiers to join in tbe pursuit. An answer has been received that a squad of cavalry has been sent out with a wagon ol supplifij. One of the party returned this afternoon with tbe re port that the robbers had crossed the Arkansas river nine mles nest of Kinsley. ANOTHER rHOITLESS ATTEMPT. Pueblo, Col., 28. Last Saturday evening a west bsund train, on the South Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railway, was boarded, a few miles eaat of Dodge city.by four men who attempted attempt-ed to rob tbe express messenger. Two of the robbers jumped on the engine, compelled the engineer and fireman to do as directed, while the other iwj boarded the express car. The express messenger, however, prove.) too plucky and repulsed them. He thinks he ebot one ot the robbers aB be was only thrpe feet off and dropped when the messenger fired. The robbers escaped, but are hotly pursued by a competent party and as the trail in plain there is little doubt of their capture. Tbe robbers had previously bound and gagged the agent ol a small station eaat of Dodge city, and ransacked his sate. |
