Show City Council. Meeting of the city council, Tuesday evening, April 9th, 1S78, Mayor Little presiding: j A communication signed by 1,176 residents of the north bench, represented repre-sented that the water supply was inadequate for cilinary and irrigat ing purposes; that the signers were taxed the same as other citizens; that they had expended $10,000 in sinking sink-ing wells; that the water in Red I Butte was not sufficient to supply their wants and they were compelled to carry water long distances, and asking for the right to the surplus water from City creek, that they might be relieved from inconvenience o( packing, or buying, or using the water which passes through the graveyard. Petition received and referred to the committee on irrigation. Alex. McRae and thirteen others petitioned for the privilege of working out a portion ol the delinquent taiee of the 11th ward. Petition received and the prayer thereof granted to the amount of $150, the work to be done under the direction of the supervisor. George C. Lambert petitioned for the use of part of the Bidewalk on the block Hon. George Q. Cannon resides, between 1st and 2d West, for the purpose of piling building material thereon, for the erection of tbe Juvenile Instructor office. Petition recoived and tho prayer thereof granted. Jehn Blakemore, by communication, communica-tion, proposed to grant tbe right ot way for a bridge across City creek near Dr. Park's residence, the path to go tbrougb his lot and ha 1GJ- feet wide, aleo offering to give a deed for said path whenever required. Communication Com-munication received and referred, with instructions to procure the deed, The committee on publio grounds, to whom was referred the petition of J. M. Russell, for permissian to locate ! a claim on a portion of the northeast I quarter, section 30, township one, range one east, and to dig for coal. reported and recommended that tbe petition be allowed. Report received and recommendation adopted, bo far as to permit him to propeot for coal. The same committee reported on the petition of E. D. Hoge and others, in behalf of the Odd Fellows, asking for a grant of a certain piece of land, that the land in question was outside the limits of the city. Report received and adopted. The committee also reported on the petition of W, Selley, setting forth that he had purchased a piece of land from tho agent of the city, which bad eubse-fallen eubse-fallen into the hands of one C. B. Tylor, and asking relief in the matter, eporied and reoommended that the money he paid for the land 5 be refunded to him. Report received and adopted and amount appropriated. The committee &Uo reported on the petitions of A. D. Wheeler and others of the Deseret base ball club, Oliver Durant and sixty-one others, who I were desirous of leasing Washington square, together with the remon strance of John PI at ta and others, aud recommended that it would not bo wise to lease said ground to the detriment detri-ment of others, and that the petition be set aside and the prayer thereof be not granted. Report received and tho recommendation adopted. The special oommittea ou artesian wells presented a oommunio&tion from Messrs. J. W. Caoley and Gao. W. Carter, guaranteeing to sink a well 500 feet deep on tho following terms: Three dollars por foot for the first 100 feet, $6 for the second and third hundred and $8 for tbe fourth and fifth, two-thirds of the amount for each hundred feet to be paid alter tbe completion of said each hundred feet, with tho privilege of taking the machinery alter tbe entire depth was reached. Communication wits received and placed on file. It was moved and carried that the oity advertise for bids for sinking a well, whereby water could bo bad (or the cemetery. Tbe committee on licences, to whom was referred the petition of Dr. Hamilton and others for a license for a certain blind man to keep a small retail store, reported and re commended that the liasoso j3 granted for one year. Report received re-ceived and petition granted. Alderman Dinwoodey reported in regard to the canal in the 5th ward. He, in company with the mayor, the selectmen of the couuty and members mem-bers ol the council committee on improvements, bad visited the canal, examined it, and agreed that it tiould be widened ten feet immediately, immedi-ately, and that tho expecse, which would probably not exceed $o00, be divided equally between the city and county. Report received and action approved. An appropriation of $1,000 was made to pay interest on borrowed , money. Tbe sum of $1,000 was appropriated for the uae of the suijarintendent of public works. Council adjourned till next Friday evening, at 7 o'clock. |
