He came to testify, but with bleeding heart, aa he said, and aa a duty, against one ol his corapanions-in-arma, who atole from bim the famous loson d'oro. He prepared himself for hia painful step by passing an hour in prayer in the subterranean chapel of San Carlo Borromeo at the Duomo. This is an octagonal chapel, the walls of which are oovered with basa-reliefs basa-reliefs and caryatides of silver. In the centre is a Barcophagus of silver, sil-ver, ornamented with gold and gems, containing the body of the tiaint, dressed in priestly robes. A few lights send their feeble rays on the worshippers who often come to this shrine to kneel and pray, or on the curious travelers who, guided by their faithful red-bound Baedoker, penetrate pene-trate into this part ol ihe cathedral, i Cor.
