Show The J euro Exodus. St. Louis, 1G, After something of a luil, the tide of colored emigration from the south has set in this week, and some GOO people arrived since Sunday. It is taxing the refugee relief re-lief committee to the utmost to provide pro-vide for them; in fact.it isovertaeked, and they are not Only out ot money but are several hundred dollars in debt. This committee reports that over 6,000 emigrants have arrived bo f.ir, and of tbeae about 2,000 are able to pay their wy to Kansas. The remainder re-mainder were sheltered, led and partially par-tially clothed while here, and thoir passage paid to Wyandotte, Kansas. About 700 have been forwarded this ! week, and theie now remain in the ;city about 350 of whom many are sick ar.d unable to travel. The committee recoived in money from all sources less than $2,000, and clothing and food of about fS.OOO value. Several hundred more relugeea are either on their way up river or ready to start on their pilgrimage, and these may be supplemented by other hundreds, and perhaps thousands, The committee again urgently appeal for aid from benevolent and humane people. |
