Show William Clayton Dead. William Clayton, Eeq., died suddenly sud-denly yesterday. This gentleman has been eeriouely indisposed foi several months past, and his life baa frequently fre-quently been despaired of, though he has continually rallied, and hopes have been entertained for his ultimate, ulti-mate, recovery. The complaint instrumental in-strumental in terminating the earthly career of this highly respected, well-known and useful citixen was dropsy, and is one from which be has au fie red for years. A few months ago, while he held the ofnoe of territorial auditor, he euflered such a severe attaik tbat there were but light hoped for his reoovery, and though it did not directly prove fatal, was of Buch an aggravated charaoter that be was compelled to resign all business cares, remain constantly at home and bas been nursed incea B-iotly ever (ince. He breathed hU last at 12 40 o'clock. A few minutes previous to this he had been engaged in conversation with a friend, and wus at his dinner when he was Buddeulp seizeJ, and death put an end to bis earthly trials. William Clayton was a veteran of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Latter-day Bajats, sod wtts closely associated with its early history, especially during dur-ing the trials that beset the life of the leader, Joseph Smith. He hasalwaya held offices of great trust in the territory, terri-tory, being territorial auditor of publlo accounts for many years; was also I territorial recorder of marka and brands, and at one time was treasurer of Z. O. M I He was a man of undoubted un-doubted ability, of erudition, and of unquestioned integrity. Had it not been for the unfortunate malady that carried him away, his great intellectual intellec-tual endowments must of necessity have forced him before the public in a vei? prominent manner, but as it was, he was compelled to lead a life of comparative retirement. I He was boru in England, July 17, 1814, emigrated to America and early became a member of the ohurob, and up to hia death remained a faithful and consistent member. |
