Show Fire. Eirly yesterday morning a fire broke cut at the south end of Commercial Com-mercial street. It was Grot discovered in the German bakery acd in a few minutes the whole building was in a blaze. BeiDg but a lumber concern, there was no possible chance ol saving it, though Walker Bros , hose was almost immediately on the ground, after wnich tha Alert and Pioneer compaoifd arrived acd five streams were pl-iyiug upon :lie bUi-i. Ti.e fire communicated with Davw' tailur ahep, which, with the bakery, was burned to tue ground, but a lew tbiogs being a-iv.-d out of the former while eperyibiug in the bakery waa destroyed. de-stroyed. The oiigin ol the fire ii uc knowo, and no conjectures are expressed as to its commencement. The bakery had been sold to a lady only on last Friday. Tue lus all told 'cannot fall short of $3,000, and will probably reach a much higher figure. A peculiar occurrence through the fire, was the distance which cinders were carried. Though there was no breeze at the time, pieces of burned shingle were picked up a block and a half away from the fire, and were scattered all over the ground within holt a block. It ia a wonder that a great many fires did not spring up through this occurrence, as the cinders cin-ders were alive when they dropped and sometimes fell on dry Btraw. But for the penonal Ices to individuals, who have invested their means in the buildings, it would not be a ead affair were the whole street swept away, which will very likely be the case some day. The Sremen complain of the difficulty diffi-culty of reaching the hydrants on Commercial street, they being under the ground, and Bay that great inconvenience incon-venience thus occurs, besides a considerable con-siderable loss of time. In winter it will be next to impossible to get at them unless they are made like the others. They should be replaced by ones similar to those on Main and other streets. |
