The Btooklyn Eagle publishes tho following about the rotten condition of the boiler of the Addphi, which recently exploded at Nor walk. William Merritt, ol Eighteenth street, a youth ol 18, was employed as fireman on board the steamboat Adtlphi, but two day ago left through a quarrel with a fallow fireman. Ho stated that during tbn period he was employed n firen.an lie was in constant terror lent the boiler burst. One month ago lie was engaged with the fireman, John Haley, in putting a pat' b over an other patch, when they beard a hisi ing noise and both rushed out on th deck, the latter exclaiming: "I guess the old thing has gone up this time." After a few moments they returned and lonud the boiler leaking leak-ing very badly. There were a number num-ber of passengers on board at the time, but they were at first Uv terri fied to give an alarm, and whin they saw that no explosion hud taken place, tbey concluded it would be better to say nothing about it. During Dur-ing the summer Beasou be and th: other firemen were frequently obiiged to work until 1 o'clock in the morning, morn-ing, cleaning the valves and making constant repairs. |
