Show Water Malt.rs. TiiO rttu.t Eiv-.rt! cilj bi.ap has frczen ur. nearly ail Hie ditches, in consequence o! which water over flows the tidew.illis and at reels in nearly all parts of the city, not only rendering traffic disagreeable but in many instances actually dangerous. If the present weather should continue, con-tinue, there would bo fully as much need of a watermastcr ;n winter as iu summer. In order to avoid the overflow, water is turned off many uf the ditches at night but notwithstanding notwithstand-ing this precaution it continues to overflow as soon as allowed to run in its accustomed channels. A man has been stationed in tho neighborhood neighbor-hood of the 20th ward to look after and control the water, but his efforts eo far havo almost been fruitless, the overflows increasing as the cold epell continues. The city council is being petitioned by many for relief, as it i8 next to impossible to get water ai ail in some of the ditches, but what that body cAn do in the matter is a conun-' drum. The only apparent relief is a moderation in the weather, which must come shortly, until which time it is more than probable that the unavoidable grievance will have to be borne with patience. |
