Show Some of the states and cities are doiugjustica to women teachers in schools, by paying them the same wages men are allowed for tho same kind of work. This honest and hou orablo custom ia becoming quite general gen-eral in Iowa, and St. Louis makes no distinction of sex iu respect to teachers' teach-ers' pay. Several of the eouthern states and one or two of the territories pay men and women equally, and there is no reason 'why all should not do so. When women do men's work they aro entitled to receive re-ceive equal wages. That they are discriminated against, in tho. matter or pay, is ono just cause of woman's complaint against man'a cruelty and inhumanity. Were they fairly and equitably dealt with, this "right" to be paid for what they do aa men ore ! paid, would be worth more to them than the ballot or privilege to hold 'office. Tbo following figures will illustrate the want of gallantry and lack of righteousness in the conduct of men in dealing with the fair sex as teachers. The average pay of Massa- ohuaetta male teachers is $8S 37 per month; wemou, $35.35. Maiue, men, $37; women, $18. Pennsylvania, men, $41.07; women, $34.09, Ohio, men, 60; women, $14. Michigan, men, $51.20; women, $28.19. |
