Show The Catholic bishop of Michigan has, speaking alter tho manner of tho world, "shouldered more than hej can carry." He has revived the raid upon marriages between Catholics, and Protestants, declaring them to hej void and illegal, antagonistic to true ! Christianity, and against the rules of i the church. The rule of the church I in former times was vigorously en forced, and its violation was regarded as sacrilegious. We believe all of the churches have rules governing this matter. It has not been long since intermarriages between members of difierent Prolestaut churches were strongly object ed to; but now this is rarely spoken of, much less objected to, aud even marriages between Protestants and Citholics are of eo frfnuent occurrence oc-currence as to excite only hrief comment. com-ment. This breaking d.nvu of turners tur-ners Bhowa that love is stronger tb.iu priests, and will not he restrained bv religious rules that have not Bound reason upon which to stand. The rules which governed formerly cannot be enforced now. People hav.i outgrown much of tbe superstition by which they were controlled by the religious leaders, and have grown more en lightened and better able to reason; and think for themselves. If the ru le ! which prevents a Catholic from mar- ! rying with a Protestant be enforced, j it will result in driving many young people out of the church, as they would rather do that than give up their marriages. |
