Show I'olHicnl Assessiueof s. Chicago, 5. Papers have Washington Wash-ington specials giving the correspondence correspond-ence between Secretary Gorbara, of the republican congressional committee, commit-tee, aud Collector Smith, of Chicago, rogardiug the refusal of the latter to allow his emplojci to bo compelled to subscribe to the campaign fund or feel under compulsion to contribute. The letters are creditable to bolh gentlemen, gen-tlemen, and indicate on one hs.nd no desire to force contributions, and on the other anxiety to aid the republican republi-can cause, but only by perfectly free and voluntary donations, under no seriso of constraint, or lear of suspension, suspen-sion, should the clerk or employe feel unable and unwilling to give. The collector expresses himself opposed to the whole system of contributions by levy or assessment, as heretofore practiced, prac-ticed, and says that unless t'.ie republican, repub-lican, p trty believe the same thing they have done a foolish wrong in professing such belief in the stale and nalionul platforms. |
