Show Base Ball. We breathe ag.iin. A Siii fait ol bare ball amusement has been bad, and it is without regret that ihe naouLce : ment is maie a', ibe last match Of the sprits between the Denvar Brown j Stockings and Oeseret and Red j Stockings clubs of this city. The, attendance up to yesterday had grown gradu.d;y smaMer and longing feats j looked emptily forth from the east' side of the tqa e yesterday after-' noon. FiV consecutive games on successive days .re rather more than the admirer of this anjusimenl can endjre, though on each day therf have beeu pretuut more than ex-OUifh to w&rraut the exhibition. Tbe fail iug '.'11 cannot be attributed to a lack of excellence iu the pUyiog, for yea terday'a game was Tutly aa fine and inteiesting a any of the aeries, if, perhaps, tbat of the 4lh be excepted; but the public h:ive had a surleit. Though the clubs were not so evenly balanced as on tbe Fourth, there waa much better playing on the part of the Reds yesterday, than by any oine during tbe five gamos. Their fielding was simply charming, not a mufJ being once made, and in fact tfwer errors appear to have oc:urred than evar before. Though Otero is unquestionably a fine pitcher, it would soem that he has no greater tnrce than Barker, and is certainly not possessed of more endurance, tbe balls of tbe latter, as customary, coming in with increased swiftness as the game approached ibe close. It ia a self-evident fact Barker's pitching was too much for our Denver friends, as ia shows by the fact tbat only one run was scored by tbem in the entire nine innings. Tbe Reda scored seven in all, and it will consequently be seen that thia is the closest game of tbe series, Tbe Red Stockings all did well, and Dunbur, the substitute for Morris on oral base, was ibe recipient ot very complimentary remarks on the manner of bis playing. The Browua have done much better, the first base man particularly playing poorly, which, however, (from his manner of shirking it) would appear to bavs been occasioned by a sore hand. Indoi-b'e playing the Browns are really fine, several being made during tbe matches by this club. Their defeat of yesterday is especially unpleasant in view of the fact tbat Meyers, the imported crack catcher ol Salt Lake, pla ed back Btop for tbem, and gave Otero an opportunity to do his best; but tbe Reds were too much for them. For thia reaaon, also, tbe Rede may heartily congratulate congratu-late themselves. Tbe totals of the live games arc: Tuesday Browns, 6; Deserets, 13. Thursday Browns, 5, Deserets, S. Friday Browns, 5; Red Stockinga, "26. Saturday Browna, 9; Deserets, 5. Monday Browns, 1; Reds, 7. From these scores it ia but just to infer that, though the Browns are un questionably a fine club, they are no match for our borne nines, and as far ea played the Reda have made tbe better Bhowiog. This fact will make tbe comiug game between the Deserets aud Redfl for tbe champion ship, oue of deep interest, and the . backers of both cluua are strong in tho upport of their favoritos, Though the Browns have been defeated ia the games ai a whole, it ia a question if any other nine ol strangers could havn come here to play and have bo strongly shared the sympathies nf those whosa prejudices ; would naturally be unfavorable to' tbem. For tbeir uniformly courteous j cot duct, good nature, and fair dis-1 position, they carry away with them the regards of the Salt Like base ball admirers, and should tbey again visit us, will be sure of a hearty welcome. |
