The exerciees com meuced by an address from Mr, Thomas Taylor, tiualee of the Fourteenth Four-teenth district. The subject of the address was trustees and their duties, and the speaker laid particular etress on the necessity of having good teachers, teach-ers, aud tho salutary eflect of Buch on the districts iu which they boor. A good teacher made a good school, gained the regard of the pupils and through them iLfl-.ienccd the par-eats par-eats so that the latter were' 'willing 'wil-ling to contribute more to the school, and with much better leeling, than they could otherwise bo induced to. He aUo emphasized the necessity of securing men of judgment judg-ment for trusties, because such men would endeavor to obtain good teachers teach-ers for the scholia. Mrs. Camilla Cobb then explained her muuuer of conducting a primary class. By the method adopted by the lady, orthography, punctuation and composition were taught at tne same lime. Sbe telld her pupils a little Btory, and requires them to write it out as near as they can recollect, recol-lect, and when it ia banded to her she corrects such mistakes as may have been made. The lady alaO explained ex-plained how she taught German to ber Hltle scholars, wbioh was done by showing them objects and telling them their names in German. Mr. Parsons, of the Sixteenth district, dis-trict, then lectured on orthography. The remarks of this gentleman embraced em-braced a brief history of our language. He Btated that after pupils entered the Second Reader he used the dictation method, as being the one most calculated to teach persona to spell correctly. "As a reason for so doing, he stated that we never learned to epell by hearing a person talk and that some other means must be adopted, and lo his idea, that of edu eating the eye so that it detects how words are spelled supplies this wanta At the conclusion of the exercises, Superintendent Lewis stated that the object ahould only be not to make the exercises interesting, but also that the society should be long lived. As the best means of securiog this end he suggested that the association meet lees frequently. In accordance with this idea the association adjourned for two weeks, toTneet in the Fourteenth ward assembly rooms. |
