Sheriff Allen had declined to act wilh Coie, but thought his being in town was a sufficient presence. The reason he did not participate on the 13th was because he knew it would engender great prejudice among the people. When Coxe and Dorman made the canvass, I thought it was not treating the people right and feit an interest in the republican party, and took every advantage I could for it. I didn't think th"y made a false canvass; I was asked to do nothing but cooperate in the canvass ol tne county; was not asked to throw out any precincts. At this point Hiscock introduced a resolution asking a sum mous for J. H. Bryant and J. W. Howell. Rejected by a vote of aye, Hiscock; nays, Hunton and Sprury- r, the latter giving as a reason for iue . vote that the testimony of these parties would relate to a subject beyond the jurisdiction of the committee. Resolutions Reso-lutions also were introduced by Hiscock that several hundred persons Alachua and Baker counties be summoned. Rejected by the Bame vote. William Green testified that he lived in Baker County in November 1S76; was a justice of the peace; received his commission November 13th; it was brought to my house by Driggera; never made application for it; he told me he wanted me to assist in making ue canvass of the county election; was sworn by Drigcers the next day at Sanderson. Witneai described the proceeding at the clerk's office sub stantially as given by others, and said he signed the paper that Driggcrs said waH a return of the flection; did not read it; did not know the contents; never performed the duties of justice of the peace afterwards, except to marry one couple. Driggers Baid to me the day before the canvass: "We are beat and must turn a leal." He said if I would assist in the canvass can-vass we could make things all right. If I had known that any precincts were thrown cut wrongfully I would not have signed it; didn't know any were thrown out until ten days afterwards; after-wards; never paid any fees far my commission as justice of the peace. Hiscock made a long cross examination exami-nation in wmcb w;tnesa uuted tdat about two monthB ao he Bwore to an allidavit at Darbyville, drawn up by : Mr. Morton, and was paid $2 for the time consumed in going trvrt-Dkin't trvrt-Dkin't ask what the affidavit was Ur. Wit ness said he didn't recollect signing it; ever knew of the affidavit helore lo day. Allen was recalled, could not re member ever signing au affidavit in Tallahasse; went to Tailahadse about that time, rlis expenses wor paid by Mr. Howell, deputy clerk for Baker county, who paid that Bisbee jr., had given him $10 to give to me; rpmaiuid in Tallahasse three days.
