Show KAISER WILLIAM ON THE CATHOLIC CA-THOLIC QUESTION. New York, 10. Foreign papers of the 25th of Feb., contain the following follow-ing letter, received by Lord Russell from the German Emperor: "Berlin, Feb. Sth, 1S74. To Dear Lord Kus-sell: Kus-sell: I have received your letter of Jan. 28th, with the resolution of the great meeting in London, and with my ambassador's report of the proceedings. pro-ceedings. I thank yeu sincerely for the communication and for the ao eonipanyinLj expression of your personal per-sonal goodwill. It is incumbent on me to be leader of my people in the struggle maintained through centuries past by the German Eoaperonj of earlier days against a power in domination, domi-nation, which has in no country in the world been compatible with the freedom and welfare of the nation; a power which, if victorious in our days, would imperil, not in Germany alone, the blessings of Reformation, liberty, commerce anil authority of law. i accept the battle thus imposed upon me in the fulfilment of my kingly duties and in the firm reliance on God to whose help we look for victory vic-tory but also in a spirit of regard for the,i;recd of my fathers which has been stamped oy my ioreiainers in ma laws and administration of my Btates. The latest measures of my government govern-ment do not infringe upon the Romish church or the free exercise of religion by her votaries; they only give to the independence of the legislation legisla-tion of thecountry some of the guarantees long potse&jed by other countries and formerly possessed by Prussia, without being held by the Romish church as incompatible with a free exeroide of her religion. I rejoice re-joice at the proof aflbrded me by your letter that the sympathises of the people of England would not fail me in this struggle; the people of England to whom my people and my royal house are bound by the rem-eiiiberanco rem-eiiiberanco of many a past and honorable hon-orable struggle maintained in common com-mon since the days of William of Orange. Or-ange. I beg you to communicate thiB lutter with my hearty thanks to the gtntlemeuwho sigued the resolutions, antrl reinaiu yours sincerely, Wilhelm, |
