Just before the close of business this morning in the Interior department, Secretary Chandler Chand-ler signed a formal notification to the chief clerks of three divisions and seven other principal clerks of tho bureau of Indian atl'airs, that their services from this date will be dispensed dis-pensed with. The removals are based upon the recommendation of Commissioner Com-missioner Smith, and has made a clean sweep of all clerks associated for any considerable time with the past history of the bureau. Tho desire (as the secretary and commissioner express ex-press it) is to begin anew. Commissioner Commis-sioner Smith siguiDcs his confidenco in the personal integrity of chief clerk Clura, by recommending him for a transfer to some other positiou "in the department. The notices of removal reached most of tho offices after the clerks interested had left for the day, and in these instances were forwarded to their homes. Their successors are not yet appointed. Tho pressure for (office has become so great at the Iu-j Iu-j terior department that Secretary iCbaudler has posted the iollowing notice: "The socrotary declines to receive applicants for appointment in this department. They must apply to tho appointment clerk ia room 36." A largo number of congressmen and strangers are arriving by every train, and by Wednesday next a quorum of membere will have arrived, it is the intention to bavo a democratic demo-cratic causue on tho speakership next Saturday night. The appointment of coiumiwioner of Indian aflairs in placo of Smith, has been tendered to Kdward U. Tobey, of Boston. Tobey is here tonight, to-night, at the request of tho president and secretary of tho interior. There is every reason to believe that Tobey will accept and be appointed on Monday. Tho vacancies caused by the removals to-day in the Indiau bureau will be filled after consultation consulta-tion with the new commissioner. |
