Avery, yesterday u witness wit-ness mentioned ft rumor that I was interested in a distillery or liquor house at Louisville, Ky. Substantially Substan-tially the same wa3 circulated in St. Louis, by corrupt officials anil guilty diHtillers, their confederate and i'rionda lant Kpring, obviously for the purpose of breaking tho force ol tbe proceedings against them. So long as the ruaUer rested in mero street rumor or in tho columns of newspapers friendly to the ring, 1 could Dot properly tako notice ol it, but now that it has becu dragged into court, as it appears ut tho instance of indicted officials, I deem it proper to request that every ponton whoso namo has been or can bo given you as having knowledge of such alleged facts hall ho brought boforo the grand jury and subjected to tho most rigid examination. The statement is absolutely ab-solutely and unqualifiedly false ho far as it uflectu me; but Idonotdcsiro to allow tho matter to rest upon my denial, I beg to repeat tiio ruquost heretofore communicated to you, that those frauds on tho government shall be probed to the veiy bottom; that ovory romificatiuu of tho ring shall be followed in ovory part from beginning to end, nnd that no one having connection with or guilty knowledgo ol its operations shall be permitted to escape. So far aH this department is concerned, I ask that every allegation against any o Hi cor of it, from its head to its humblest employ em-ploy (5, bo thoroughly investigated and vigorously prosecuted, if any ground exists there-tor.
