At five o'clock n.m. a barge lyiug in Regent's canal, ncaj the Zoological - Gardens, and loadec with powder, exploded, killing s number of persons, wounding many, and shattering the bridefsand housei in the vicinity. The explosion was heard at a distance dis-tance of twenty miles from tiie place where it occurred. The firemen havi been dragging the canal all the morning. morn-ing. Up to 1:30 p. m. five bodies ol the victims of the explosion had been recovered. Lights in the railway station sta-tion nnd other buildiogs two miles away were extinguished by the concussion. con-cussion. Many persons made a narrow nar-row escape from death. A numbei of animals in the Zoological garden? were killed. Th quantity of powder that exploded was four tons. The details of the occurrence show that its disastrous effects were widespread, many trees were uprooted, and house located two miles distant from the canal were shattered. Seven persons are yet missing. There was a perfect panic here lor hours, acd it was not not till the cause of the terrific report was learned that the fears of the people peo-ple were allayed.
