Show toiicregatioualislst in Council. I New Haven, 2. The Congregational Congrega-tional Council discussed the proposed consolidation of philanthropic and religious services all day to-day. The first resolution commending the American board of congregational foreign missions to churches, and ad- j vising that the funds which formerly were contributed by churches to operations in Papal Unds through American and loreigu CnrUtian Unions, be added to tbe contributions ordinarily made to that board. The second and third resolutions were postponed. The Fourth resolution was unanimously unani-mously adopted as follows: That the council heartily approve of the consolidation con-solidation already etlected between the American educational society and the college society, and commend the new organization to the gem rom support of churches. There are five more resolutions to be considered at the afternoon session. ses-sion. Rev. Dr. Eds n, ot Indianapolis, delegate from the Presbyterian Church, and Rev. Win. H. Rice, of Philadelphia, delegate from the Synod of the Moravian Church, were welcomed. Rev. W. H. H. Murray read a paper on "How to preach the gospel I efficiently to the masses." In his opinion a stock of t neology was not necessary for this, but a thorough knowledge and appreciation of the nature of the average man. and a personal experience of God's power were needed; but no provision has been made for preaching to the masses. Ministers are barricaded in the pulpits, and the doors of ch jrches are barred except to the rich. Provision Pro-vision for the masses must be made before the subject of his paper could, in his opinion, become one to be considered. |
