Show ' His First Case. 1 U. S. Commissioner Tooby, of this district, has had his first case the People, etc.jfj. Andrew Smith, a city policeman, and as a commissioner the Judge gives evidence of being a success. The action was a small affair at tho beginning, but by the necessary "ballooning" it assumed somewhat gigantic proportions before the end was reached. The case was as follows: A couple of days ago a lady met Mr. Smith on the street and asked him to accompany her to sec Mr. Stcnbcrg, tho painter, alleging that that gcntlemnn owed her l.oO, and when she had asked him for the money, Stenberg not only refused to pay her but also had abused her. Mr. Smith accompanied the lady to Stenbei'g's house, when the latter became be-came abusive, and Mr. Smith arrest ed him. Stenberg retired to go Willi the officer and a squabble ensued, Mr. Smith using force to accomplish his design of taking Stenberg to the City Hall. On Friday Stenberg was lined by Justice Clinton for his part in the transaction; and on the same day Stenberg swore out a complaint com-plaint before Commiisioncr Tooby. against Smith, charging him with assaulting aivX boating him (Sten berg !.
