Notwithstanding the depression of business and the decline in the value ot real estate, nine western states carried over $100,000,000 more fire insurance in 1874 than in 1872. He was quite willing lo receive his pay in tho greenbacks which ho is doing no much to discredit, dis-credit, however. A respectable iournal of Philadel phia seems to think that tho southern south-ern " lost cause" is betraying it instincts in-stincts offensively in setting up in Richmond a statue to Stonowall Jackson, Jack-son, presented to the slate of Virginia Vir-ginia by English sympathizers, and it cannot see how it is possible with such visible and permanent honors heaped on the leaders of the conlcde-rule conlcde-rule cause for northern men to for-' for-' get tho animosities of tho civil war. Ten to thirteen dollars a week for men arc the average wajjes, and it is dilticult to see how some of the large families of the laborers can bo supported sup-ported decently. But there is no decency de-cency about it. A great many ol them are huddled together promiscuously promiscu-ously in tenement houses without regard re-gard to health or morality. As a rule they work bard, live extremely plain, are orderly and economical as tar as they can be, and tho claims of the corporations now made are only additional ad-ditional abuses heaped upon an in duatrious, useful class of citizons. |
