Teel, of Los Angeles, on the 6th of October addressed a letter to L. E. Sleigh, a former clerk of the mission ludian agency in California, expressing astonishment as-tonishment and disgust at the course of tiie government towards the Tcm-ecula Tcm-ecula Indians, pointing out their wrongs and concluding: "Can you not go to the department and get so mo aid for them. The cheapest' thing that can be done is to buy their homes and give it to them. A half: township would accommodate them I all." Indian Commissioner Smith , replied, agreeing with hun as to the I wrongs and asserting that the department depart-ment has so endeavored to represent their case to congress as lo secure the action necessary for their protection. Tbe trouble is the disposition prevailing pre-vailing lo swell the number of the class known as Indians not taxed at the expense of their citizenship and of all their natural rights in order to furnish larger room and privileges for others reorganized as citizens and who thus are enabled to come into possession of lands which these people peo-ple and their ancestors as Mexican citizens improved, cultivated from generations ago, out ol their natural rights, are now debarred by legal ownership, and actual occupation by American citizens. The commissioner commis-sioner will urge congress to provide for the purciiase of other satisfactory homes lor Temecula Indiana, An attempt will be made in the next congress to expose what is said to be a lawyer's ring in connection with the distribution of the Geneva award, and the legislation past and prospective which affects that distribution. distri-bution. This eflbrt, it is understood, will proceed from those who have a large personal stake in the distribution distribu-tion of the award, and who consider that their rights have not heretofore been properly guarded by congress. It is said that of the $1,000, 00o' to be awarded under the present act, $:J,-000,000 $:J,-000,000 have passed into the hands of this alleged ring. statements nave been put in circulation cir-culation that at least three of the members of Grant's cabinet are disgusted dis-gusted at Mr. Chandler's appointment, appoint-ment, aud it has even been said there was a probability that one or more of them would resign in consequence. It is known to bo true that Bristow and I'ierrepont are not satisfied, and have expressed themselves to tne effect that Chandler is no improvement improve-ment on Delano. It its not likely, ' however, that their dissatisfaction' will induce them to go the length of resigning. |
