Show THE BURN. Who Are the ' Losers Further Particulars. The Eiist Teruplo stroet fire continued con-tinued to burn all night, and it was not until 4 o'clock Friday morning that the engines were allowed to ceojo working. The hardy firemen, who bad labored so energetically and faithfully from the skirt, did not rest until the danger of the fire again reviving and spreading had passed. The flames did not extend beyond the limite indicated in Friday's Herald. An old adobe house in the rear of Matthiesacn block, belonging to J. B. Hawkins, was destroyed, and with this exception the only buildings burned, were those mentioned in our r previous report. Much of the property destroyed was insured, some for its lull value, and some for part. The principal losers ' are, Mark McKimmins' livery stable, ! $6,000, insured for $5,500; Leo Hol-" Hol-" lander, jeweler, insured for $3,750, ' damage to stock and fixtures, prob-' prob-' ably $3,000; George Romney, owner 1 of the White house, damage, $1,800, insured lor $2,000; Podlech, lessee of ' White house, damage to furniture, bedding, crockery, etc., estimated, $4,000, no insurance; Dr. Taggart, drugs, loss, $1 .800, insurance, $1,000; Chialett Brothers, owners of Hollander's Holland-er's store, $5,000, insured for $3,000; Leebes it, Co., cigar dealers, loss $1,000, insurance, $1,000 ; J. G. James & Co., loss, uninsured, $300; Julius Jordan, cigars, insured for $1,500, which will probably cover loss; L. Refuel, loss on building, uninsured, un-insured, $5,000; Buhring, Denver beer hall, loss, $6,000, uninsured; JIatthiesen, block, $6,000, insurance, $2,250; Charley Yeomans, saloon, $1,000, no insurance; Sangio, saloon, $700, no insurance. The combined losses of the occupants of the eecond floor offices, will probably amount to $5,000. This sum is distributed among Burnes &. Smedlcy, Dr. A. W. Calder, Utah Skandinav, Folsom &. Taylor, A. Miner and one or two others. Comparatively few goods were burned, the great damage to stores being the result of hasty and careless moving. The firo did not touch Sangio's saloon, yet the place was gutted by the crowd; Yeoman's loss is almost wholly attributed to maliciousness ma-liciousness and careleesneas in removing re-moving bar furniture, and the reckless reck-less breakiDg of glass, wrenching of costly doors from their fastenings, etc. Mr. Podlech's whole loss is the result of pitching his hotel furniture into the street after the usual fashion mirrors thrown out of second Btory windows, and feather beds gently carried down stairs. The insurance is all in good com- 1 panies, represented here by Burnes & Smedley, Hugh Anderson a nd H. Wadsworth. We understand losses will be promptly paid. The general impression seemi to be that the fire was intentionally started, but suspicion, even, has not yet indicated in-dicated the guilty scoundrel who was the author of so much destruction of property. Two men, Sam Clark and Thomas, are under arrest for setting set-ting fire to McKimmins' stable, tboueh from what we can learn, the evidence against them is shadowy. They are to have a hearing before Justice Pyper this afternoon. There seems to be no doubt that the firing of the stable was the work of an incendiary, in-cendiary, as the main fire was checked before it reached that structure, struc-ture, and the flame caught the stable at an improbable point, where it could icarcely have touched without being carried by human bands. The majoriry of those burnt out "show blood," and were actively stirring yesterday to again establish themselves. Dr. Taggart has leased the new store adjoining the Deseret national bank, and expects to open in a short time with another large stock of drugs, medicines, etc. Jordan Jor-dan came up on the next block and will speedily swing out his sign. Hollander was casting about for a suitable stand, and Yeomans had a force of workmen fitting up his demoralized saloon. Romney immediately im-mediately commences the repairing of the White house, while Bangio is considering whether be cannot do better by seeking a new location, now that business has been suspended in that direction. Dr. Calder has taken a suite of offices in the Wasatch hotel, and will be ready for business next week. It will undoubtedly be some time before new buildings are erected on the Bites of those burned, as the present pre-sent state of business would scarcely justify the outlay of means for that purpose. |
